Once, giants roamed the earth’s stages and the Gibson Super 400 was at the top. Introduced in 1934, the Super 400 was priced at $400 — hence the name. Still in production, the price has increased somewhat.

The cutaway became an available option in 1939, with the model name of ‘Super 400 Premiere’, but eventually became the C model for ‘Cutaway’. In the 1950’s, the Super 400 started getting pickups, with a thicker top to reduce feedback.

This rare acoustic model is in great shape and looks back to the way the top-range guitars were just before WW2.

This Gibson L-5 CT from 2002 could be your best friend if you’re headed to the (orchestra) pit. It’s in near perfect condition, and is just a joy to play.

The L-5 CT is based on the L-5 CES but is a ‘thinline’ version, with a side with of 2.25″. It features the same carved, tuned spruce top and carved flame maple back.

Gibson L-4C Archtop, 1952 (consignment) Sold

Here is a very nice Gibson L-4C from 1952. The L-4C was a cutaway version of the L4, and while this guitar was originally fully acoustic the pickup has been added to the pickguard so the body isn’t modified. The L-4 and L-4C feature a fully hollow body with a carved spruce top coupled with maple laminate back and sides. The L-4 was produced from 1912 to 1956 and the L-4C was produced from 1949 to 1971.

The Gibson Byrdland was originally a custom built version of the L-5 and based on suggestions made by Billy Byrd and Hank Garland, two prominent Nashville session players in the mid to late 1950’s (Hank Garland played on many Elvis and Roy Oribison sessions that produced hit records).

The Byrdland was the first ‘thinline’ body and has a 23.5″ scale length, so really ‘wide’ chord voicings are easier. In production since 1955, this is a 1975 example. It’s in great playing shape and it has been played.

Rickenbacker Model 325C64 JetGlo, 2011 (consignment) SOLD

Based closely on the 1964 model, the Rickenbacker 325C64 brings forth memories from anyone exposed to the ‘British Invasion’ – or the Ed Sullivan show! – in the early and mid 1960’s. This 2011 example is in good condition and is really interesting to play – and of course it has that sound. Complete with Accent vibrato tailpiece.
