I had a lot of fun with this Gibson Guitars SGJ 2014 120th Anniversary model. Took it off the wall, plugged it straight into one of my current favourite amps – a Vox AC15 – and it sounded great.

Here’s a wonderful Gibson SG Custom from 1964. This was the top of the line for electric solidbodies in 1964!
The SG was originally introduced in 1961 as a complete re-design of the Les Paul guitar, which was not selling. However, Les Paul was not entirely thrilled with the design and towards 1963 the Les Paul name started to come off these instruments – partly as Gibson used up their stock of Les Paul branded truss rod covers and decals. By the end of 1963, the instument was known as the SG.
MORE →The Gibson SG Standard has been an industry icon for decades. Introduced in 1961, the SG quickly became popular thanks to its streamlined, lightweight design and rich, crunchy tones. For 2013, Gibson has made some subtle teaks to the SG Standard model, bringing it closer to the design of its early 60’s predecessors. MORE →Gibson introduced what became the SG during 1961 as a Les Paul model. With the end of the Les Paul endorsement deal for this guitar, the guitars were renamed to SG, though this process didn’t end till 1963 when Gibson finally ran out of the ‘Les Paul’ branded parts! The first production models carried ‘PAF’ pickups and a unique (and quickly discontinued!) side-pull trem. Various configurations of pickups, pickguards, bridges and tailpieces followed.
The 1968 SG Standard featured a larger ‘batwing’ pickguard, two humbuckers, Kluson tuners and the Maestro Vibrola.
This example is in good playing condition but was repaired long ago.

This 1974 example shows a fair amount of wear, which really means that the guitar has been used for its intended purpose and has proved it can really do the job!
