This is likely the best-condition Late 1950s Kay Model K5965 Hollowbody Electric Bass I’ve seen. There’s very little wear and one mark on the back. It looks like it’s spent most of its life in its case.

The Kay instrument company made many, many instruments from the late 1930’s. This Kay Pro Electric from 1952 is in excellent condition and is a good example of what was available just before solidbody guitars really took off.
Kay instruments were widely used by many top pop popular artists, from jazz great Barney Kessel to Andrew McMahon in Howlin’ Wolf’s band.
MORE →Today we’re looking at a wonderful Kay Hollowbody Model K162 bass from 1957, in original condition. Kay introduced the Model K162 Bass in 1952 in response to Leo Fender’s 1951 Precision Bass, making it the second electric bass produced. The K162 was the first hollowbody bass produced, years before Gibson used the basses in their recently-purchased Epiphone line to enter the electric bass (EB) market.
This model became known as the “Howlin’ Wolf” bass because it was used by the Wolf’s bassist, Andrew “Blueblood” McMahon.
