The Gibson L-4 was built between 1912 and 1956, and underwent a number of changes. Originally it had – like many archtops of the time – an oval soundhole; this changed to a round soundhole in 1928, and finally to the now-common F-holes in 1935.

MORE →Here’s a lovely, near mint 2010 FireGlo Rickenbacker 4003 Bass. The 4003 Bass is the successor to the 4001, which it finally fully replaced in 1986.
Visually, the differences between the 4001 and 4003 are subtle. However, the 4003 sports a different truss rod system with adjusters at either end of the neck, and updated wiring.
