Serial Number | N/A, 1966 model. |
Pricing | $2599.99 CND with case. No Longer Available |
Neck | 3-piece maple neck with bound rosewood fingerboard. |
Frets | 22 frets with minor wear in low position. This instrument is strung with flatwounds so the frets don’t wear very quickly. Zero fret installed. |
Body | Spruce top and bound, laminate maple back and sides. |
Finish | Original nitrocellulose lacquer sunburst finish. As is typical of lacquer finishes (and these vintage basses), there is some heavy lacquer checking on the top and back, though the finish is adhering. |
Hardware/electronics | Original dual pickups and volume/tone controls and switches. Original tuning gears, bridge and tailpiece. |
Playability/Action | These basses are a joy to play. They are light and easy to sit or stand with. This one plays cleanly with lots of bottom end ‘thud’. |
Case | Original case included. |
Comments | The Hofner 500/1 ‘Beatle Bass’ was a very influentual instrument. Though it was outstripped by the Fender and Rickenbacker basses as stage volume levels rose exponentially and feedback became a very real problem, many popular recordings featured this instrument. This example is in good original shape and is fully playable. |
