Comments | The banjo has been enjoying a remarkable renaissance. Once a presence on nearly every stage, the banjo was eclipsed by the amplified guitar for many decades. Now, however, more and more people are discovering how great a banjo can sound, and how good and varied banjo music really is.
Here at The Twelfth Fret, we sell and service many banjos and it’s a daily treat to hear how many good players there are. The tenor banjo is a shorter scale at 21 inches than regular 5-string models, which exceed 25 inches, and is often played with a pick (plectrum). When tuned to GDAE, it’s often now found playing Irish music, following the fiddle lines. It was commonly found filling the rhythm chair in early 20th century dance bands. The instrument is loud and bright with lots of attack, and that tonal combination worked very well with the technology of the day – amplification (if any) was limited to the vocalists, while microphones, broadcast, recording and playback methods – radio, cylinders and 78 RPM records – lacked the full dynamic range of later technology. This is a 2011 Deering Sierra 17-Fret Tenor Banjo in great condition. It comes complete with the original Deering hardshell case.
