Comments | Yngvie Malmsteen exploded onto the music scene in his own band, Rising Force, in 1984. Known for extreme speed and technique, he combines neo-classical and rock values. As part of his growth, he’s used guitars with heavily scalloped fingerboards.
Scalloping has two main effects. First, there’s an enormous amount of ‘traction’ because the player only touches the strings, not the fingerboard, so it’s very easy to bend strings, not just across but also towards the board. Secondly, the player also has to pay close attention to their technique because it’s very easy to send chords out of tune. The technique adjustment is largely in the area of relaxing – which also means that playing speed can increase. As a side effect, the lighter touch needed means that frets and strings last a lot longer! This 2001 Fender Yngwie Malmsteen Signature Strat is in great, original condition. |

Neck | Maple neck – based on a 1970’s style Strat neck, this has a heavily scalloped maple fingerboard. It’s in very good condition. |
Frets | Minor fret wear. Frets can last longer on scalloped instruments because they require a lighter touch. |

Hardware/electronics | All original hardware. 70’s style tuners and trem bridge, white pickguard and backplate, diMarzio pickups, and just a master volume control. Brass nut. |
Playability/Action | Plays very well as is. The scalloping effect takes some getting used to; there’s a large amount of temptation to press a lot harder than is needed, and the player must learn to relax. |
