| Comments | This is a very clean 1998 Martin D-28 Dreadnought guitar.
Martin introduced the Dreadnought body shape in 1916, building the first ones for the Oliver Ditson company – these did not carry the Martin brand name. These instruments had mahogany backs and sides, and the necks joined the body at the twelfth fret. The Ditson company disappeared in 1920, and the Dreadnought guitar went with it. In 1931, Martin re-introduced the Dreadnought body size, complete with 12-fret neck, with the D-1 and D-2. By 1933, these had the 14-fret necks and were the D-18 (Mahogany) and D-28 (Rosewood), following Martin’s standard numbering system for materials and trim levels. This 1998 Martin D-28 is in great shape with little wear, and is a good example of what a D-28 can be. It’s been played, but I’d have to say not a lot – it sounds good now, and will open right up with use. The top finish has faded a little to a nice, warm almost cedary amber tone. |
