1964 Gibson Trini Lopez Custom (consignment) SOLD



Comments Here’s a very cool 1964 Gibson Trini Lopez Custom. Gibson initially released the Trini Lopez as a signature model during 1964 and produced it until 1971. There were two very distinctly different versions, the Custom or Deluxe – pictured here – based on the full size hollow Barney Kessel model, and the Standard, based on the ES-335 platform. The label only identifies this instrument as a ‘Trini Lopez’, but the construction differences between the two versions are significant.

Serial Number 176864, built during 1964 in Kalamazoo, Michigan – this has the Union Made label that appeared between 1964 and 1969.

Neck Mahogany neck with bound rosewood fingerboard, Mother of Pearl offset block position markers, 6-on a side peghead with mother of pearl Gibson position logo. ‘Custom’ engraved on truss rod cover.
Frets Original frets, with the binding up against the fret ends. Some fret wear.
Body Fully hollow archtop, double Florentine (pointy!) cutaways. Curly maple laminate used for top, back and sides. Elongated diamond soundholes.
Finish Original gloss nitrocellulose lacquer cherry sunburst finish, in good condition with some finish repair near the neck joint and headstock. The neck finish is an original metallic red.
Hardware/electronics All original nickel hardware – Grover tuners, ABR bridge with nylon saddles on rosewood base, trapeze tailpiece with rosewood insert featuring the “Trini Lopez” model engraved plaque. Two humbucking pickups with Gibson’s standard wiring – pickup selector on the upper bout and individual volume and tone controls. Unusually, the lower bout has a standby switch.
Playability/Action Plays well and cleanly.
Case Non-original hardshell archtop case included.
