Comments | Here’s the real deal – a 1960 Sunburst Fender Stratocaster. The Stratocaster was introduced in 1954, and late in 1959 (for the 1960 model year) the first major revision appeared: the introduction of the rosewood fingerboard, multi-layer pickguards, and a 3-tone sunburst.
The neck itself changed dramatically. The original design used a single piece of maple with a channel routed in the back, with two holes drilled for the trussrod. On these guitars, a rosewood-slab fingerboard was added and the more traditional method of mounting the trussrod from the top was used, so there is no ‘skunk stripe’. Leo Fender was also trying to target the jazz market as well (as seen with the introduction of the Jazzmaster and Jaguar) and so the necks became a bit wider and thinner with less of a ‘V’ profile, more towards a ‘D’. The 3-tone sunburst was originally quite red, but the red tints used tended to be quite photo-reactive and have changed tone over the years. This one has faded towards a slight brown, though there may be a tobacco smoke influence. This fine example is in great condition for its age – and the refret makes it extremely playable. If you happen to need a vintage strat that is ready to play, record or tour with – this could be it. |
