The Gibson Southern Jumbo was originally released in 1942 as the Gibson SJ and replaced the J-55. It was targeted to Gibson's dealers in southern states, and while it's structurally similar to the Gibson J-45, it is a bit fancier, with split parallelogram position markers and more binding.

Under the leadership of Ren Ferguson, Gibson Acoustic in Bozeman, Montana obtained a number of historic instruments and based new models on careful reviews of their dimensions and construction. The Gibson Southern Jumbo is one of the results of that effort.

There are often some differences in these models from the originals - usually in the form of Grover Roto-Matic tuners instead of Kluson-style models, and LR Baggs Element pickups are factory installed. The controls are tucked under the bass side of the soundhole.

Still, the construction is the traditional Southern Jumbo - Adirondack spruce top, mahogany back and sides, mahogany neck and rosewood for the fingerboard and bridge. The Gibson inlays on the headstock and the split parallelogram position markers are mother of pearl.

Dating to May 13, 2008, this Gibson Southern Jumbo is a great guitar. It's got a wonderfully full, rich sound and is very responsive. The action is very good and there is lots of saddle height. The finish is in very good condition, with only light wear; this guitar was well cared for.

The original Gibson Acoustic hardshell case, by TKL, is included.
