S/N: 024950563, dates to September 6, 2005 at the Gibson Nashville Plant.
The Gibson Explorer was a radical design even by 1958 US design standards - there were huge fins everywhere! Unfortunately, the Explorer was anything but a success and was built for one year. Some models built in 1958 were shipped in 1963, but otherwise the design disappeared till around 1975. Around that time, there was a Music Man amplifier advertising campaign featuring Eric Clapton, holding an original Explorer plugged into a Music Man stack.
This Gibson Explorer dates to September 6 2005 and was built at the Gibson Nashville plant. It features a mahogany body and neck with rosewood fingerboard and gold plated hardware. The pickups are Gibson R490 at the bridge and R496 at the neck. The original tuners have been replaced with Sperzel locking models. It is in good overall condition with a bit of belt buckle rash on the back and a bit of a scrape on the top finish at the extreme end of the lower bout. A hardshell case is included.
I like this guitar a lot - it plays well, it's very resonant, and the shape is acutally very comfortable to sit with.
