S/N: 139449, built during 1954 at the C. F. Martin plant in Nazareth, Pennsylvania.
The Martin D-18 has been a standard since its introduction in 1931. Martin's first dreadnoughts were for the Ditson company and were much like the later D-18. Built on the dreadnought body, the D-18 uses a spruce top and mahogany back and sides to produce a sound that is clear, bright, warm and articulate. It's a favourite combination of woods for bluegrass and country players, and works well for many fingerstyles.
This Martin D-18 dates to 1954 and has been used as the maker intended. It's in decent shape, with a fair amount of finish wear. Some cracks have been repaired on the back, and it's had a neck reset and refret and a new pickguard has been installed. The top's finish has been affected somewhat by cleaning. This guitar plays well and has a rich, fully developed tone. A non-original hardshell case is included.
