Comments | Here is a lovely Gibson A-1 Mandolin from 1916. Gibson began producing the A-1 in 1902, featuring the teardrop shape and oval soundhole. This model was produced on and off; the first run ended in 1918 and restarted in 1922, that run went to 1927, then the final run from 1933 to 1943.
This example is in good solid condition and really sounds great. |

Neck | Mahogany neck with ebony center strip. |
Frets | Narrow frets with some wear, particularly around the 5th position. |
Body | Carved Spruce top, carved maple back, maple sides. |
Finish | Original natural nitrocellulose lacquer finish with some wear. The original ‘orange’ top has mellowed to a lovely amber tone. |
Hardware/electronics | The tuners have been replaced with period models; faux-tortoise pickguard, nickel tailpiece and engraved cover, ebony bridge. |
Playability/Action | Plays well and we can set it up to the player’s requirements. |
