Comments | Originally working in Orlando, Florida during the late 1970’s, Michael Tobias became well know for top-quality neck-through basses. In 1990, Gibson purchased the Tobias company and moved production to Nashville, while Tobias himself moved to California as Michael Tobias Design. Though a few transition basses were made in California, all after serial 2044 were made in Nashville.
This 2006 Tobias Growler 5 String Bass is in excellent condition. The swamp ash body provides good tone with only a moderate weight, and the body design balances well. The neck’s profile is slightly assymetrical – this was pioneered by Tobias – with the treble side a bit slimmer and the bass, where the thumb rides, a bit thicker. This is very comfortable. While the original Tobias bass design is neck-through, the Growler is a bolt-on neck, which makes service and adjustment much easier. This is one of the less expensive quality 5-string basses! |
