Comments | Here’s a cool 1977 Gibson Les Paul Custom Cherry Burst. The Les Paul Custom was introduced in 1954, as a dressed-up version of the ‘new’ Les Paul model (introduced in 1952). Originally, it featured a black finish (with a mahogany top rather than maple) and with very low frets.
The Les Paul Custom is seen on a wide variety of stages, from R&B to jazz fusion to country to — the original punk bands, including the Clash and the Sex Pistols. This 1977 example is in good playing condition, and it has been played enough to have required a refret some years ago and gain medium fret wear since then. Still, it’s got years of playing left! |
Serial Number | 73237126, built November 19,1977 at Gibson’s old plant in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It’s prodction number 126. |
Pricing | $2,650.00 Canadian with original case. Today (February 7 2015), this translates $2,137.00 US Dollars. |
Neck | 3-piece maple neck with bound ebony fingerboard, mother of pearl block position markers, Gibson logo and split diamond headstock inlay. |
Frets | This instrument has been refretted with Dunlop 6230 fretwire, so the frets extend the full width of the neck. The Gibson factory installs frets on the fingerboard and then binds it, so the binding covers the fret end. During a refret, the fret is normally extended to the full width of the neck, providing a slightly wider playing surface. This guitar has a medium degree of fret wear, which could easily be dressed and recrowned to provide an excellent playing surface. |
Body | Classic Les Paul body with 3-piece maple cap on a 1-piece honduran mahogany back. The top and back are bound and finished with white/black multilayer purfling. |
Finish | Original gloss nitrocellulose cherry burst finish in reasonable condition. There are some belt buckle marks on the back, and a stained area on the top between the tailpiece and the tail strap pin, and over the rear edge. This stain is very likely from a strap. |
Hardware/electronics | Original gold-plated hardware with normal wear and tarnish. Gold plated tuners, probably by Schaller, tune-o-matic bridge and stop tailpiece, gold plated pickup covers. Pickup selector with creme switch tip, individual volume and tone controls with black knobs. Original Gold strap pins. |
Playability/Action | Plays well, with moderate fret wear. |
Case | Original hardshell archtop Gibson case included. |
