Built from 1985 to 1991, the Yamaha LL-25T Steel String guitar is based on Yamaha’s ‘Folk’ jumbo body, with solid wood construction. This model features an Engelman spruce top, Indian rosewood for the sides and back, herringbone trim on the top, sides, back and back strip, with ebony for the bridge and bound fingerboard.
This is a very nice guitar to play, and has a full, well balanced sound, and really good action with plenty of saddle height and a nice set-up. Presently 37 years old, it’s in overall good condition with expected play and finish wear. Fret wear is light, and there is lots of fret material, strongly suggesting that it was professionally re-fretted at some point. The neck set is very good, so this guitar should have many more years of comfortable use.
The original, flat-top, oxblood-coloured hard shell case is included and contains a strap.
The Yamaha LL-25T has a brand on the back’s center strip identifying it as built at Yamaha’s factory in Kaohsiung city Taiwan ROC, which operated from 1970 to 2008. At its peak, this facility had 850 employees. When it closed, operations were moved to Hangzhou China.
Dating this guitar is uncertain. Yamaha serial number documentation indicates that from 1971 to 2001, the Kaohsiung facility an eight digit serial number scheme. It encodes the production date and rank, though with the first, single digit indicating the year. This allowed for duplicate serials every decade.
The LL-25T debuted in 1985 and this example has a six-digit serial number, as do others of this era. As the serial is fairly low compared to other dated examples, we’re calling it an early model built in 1985.
