This is a fantastic William Laskin Steel String from 2005, with Cedar top, Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, and the Laskin arm-rest.
William Laskin is one of the finest guitar builders, with exceptional talent and skill for not only construction and voicing, but also for his incredible use of engraved inlay. He has been building professionally since 1971 and worked with Jean Larrivee, along with other prominent Canadian luthiers including David Wren, Linda Manzer, Serge De Jonge and G W Barry.
This William Laskin Steel String was built at Laskin’s shop in Toronto, Ontario during 2005, and features a Red Cedar top and quite a dark set of Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides. The body blocks and neck are Mahogany, with Ebony used for the head plate, fingerboard bridge and binding. The rosette has a ring of Abalone, but otherwise this guitar is quite simply but elegantly adorned; a line of purfling follows the complete top including around the arm-rest and around the fingerboard tag.
This wonderful example of Laskin’s work is in quite good condition for being 15 years old. The top has had an original thin clear pickguard, and some vigorous strumming marked the top beyond the guard, in an arc towards the treble side binding.
This guitar plays very well, and has a full, rich and well developed voice. When we picked it up for these photographs, it was tuned to DADGAD and it sounds extremely good – every frequency range is represented.
The original Calton hard shell lightweight flight case is included as is a K & K pure mini pickup.
