Here we have a William Laskin Flamenco Blanca guitar, built in the traditional style with Cypress and Spanish Cedar during 1987 in Toronto.
William Laskin has been building guitars since at least the early 1970’s, and was one of the early staffers with Jean Larrivee, along with many other now-prominent Canadian luthiers.
The Laskin Flamenco is built using a Sitka Spruce top paired with a Cypress back and side set, and Cedro or Spanish Cedar for the neck, linings, and back bracing. Construction is the traditional Spanish ‘slipper foot’ style – the neck, heel and neck block are one unit, with the sides slotting into the heel. This is in distinct contrast to other methods where the neck and body are built separately, often using a dovetail or mortise and tenon joint. The head plate and binding are Ebony, and the fingerboard is Ebony with Ebony binding. The bridge is Indian Rosewood.
For hardware – well, there isn’t much, the traditional Flamenco guitar is pretty bare-bones. Tuner are traditional Ebony friction pegs but decorated with a white cap.
This excellent instrument has been used as intended, but not abused. It is freshly out of The Twelfth Fret Repair Shop where it received a 12-hole tie block conversion and had three top cracks repaired and cleated. Long ago, a small patch was added to the treble side lower bout. A full size, white double Golpeador or tap plate has been added to the top, with a small, clear secondary tap plate.
The 12-hole tie block conversion helps maximize downbearing at the saddle, increasing sustain and note-to-note clarity no matter the saddle height.
Fret wear is moderate. The finish is light, and as Flamenco tends to be an enthusiastic or physically expressive style, there are a few marks on the top and light wear to the back.
This William Laskin Flamenco is also fitted with a pair of passive piezo-element pickups with slotted Magnesium casings, which were made by and likely installed at the original 920 Kingston Road location of The Twelfth Fret. They are attached to an endpin jack.
This wonderful guitar plays well, is light and responsive, projects well and has a full, brilliant tone.
A TKL hard shell case is included.
