Here we have a very nice William Laskin Cedar Top and Indian Rosewood classical guitar, built during 1987 at Laskin’s shop in Toronto. One of the world’s premier guitar builders, William Laskin has been building since the early 1970s and early on, as is the case for many other now prominent builders, worked with Jean Larrivee. He is very well known for his spectacular engraved inlay work.
This William Laskin Cedar Top classical guitar has no serial number, but is signed and dated to 1987. It appears to be built in the traditional Spanish style, with a ‘Slipper Foot’ heel that the sides slot into. The top is Spruce-braced Red Cedar, and the sides, back and bridge are Indian Rosewood. The head plate and bound fingerboard are Ebony, while the neck, body blocks and linings and back braces are Mahogany. An I-Beam pickup is installed to and endpin jack. Tuners are very likely Sloane models. The finish is gloss nitrocellulose lacquer. The bass side fingerboard binding has three discreet position dots for frets three, five and seven.
In terms of wear, this William Laskin Cedar Top is in quite good shape. There was a dent in the back of the behind the second fret – this has been filled and touched up in an almost invisible manner, but the body is very well preserved. The fret tops are relatively flat, with some material left. It plays well, and has a full, rich tone and is quite responsive with a well developed voice.
A black hard shell case is included.
