Instrument Categories: Mandolins, SOLD
The Weber Big Sky F Style mandolin is no longer in production having been replaced by the Fern model – clear references to classic early American Mandolins made by Gibson and other companies.
Intended as a working player’s mandolin, the Weber Big Sky features an X-braced, carved Spruce top paired with sides and a carved back of vividly Flamed Maple, a Maple neck and Ebony for the head plate and bound fingerboard. The bridge is an original Breke model. The fingerboard is elevated, sports a full 24, full width frets, and a Celtic influenced ‘bowtie’ Mother of Pearl inlay pattern on the fingerboard itself, plus a Celtic knotwork star on the head stock. Tuners are gold-plated with faux Mother of Pearl buttons.
This Weber Big Sky F Style mandolin example dates to 2000, and is in great condition, partly because of the installed Tone-Gard Spider which not only reduces damping of the back’s vibration, it protects against a lot of potential scuffing and chipping. Fret wear is light, and the instrument has been well maintained and protected.
As is, it plays well and cleanly, with a brilliant yet warm, full sound and lots of bark.
The Weber Big Sky, like its descendant the Fern, is an excellent, top quality and professional grade mandolin, very well regarded throughout the Mandolin community.
The original hard shell case and cover are included.
Weber Mandolins are now built in Bend, Oregon, but prior to 2013 were ensconced in Belgrade, Montana which happens to be about ten miles from Bozeman. Belgrade had been the home of Flatiron Mandolins, run by Steve Carlson with Ren Ferguson and Bruce Weber playing prominent roles. Gibson felt that Flatirons were very good and tended to look rather a lot like Gibson mandolins – so they bought the company, and ultimately moved the Mandolin work to Nashville, and Gibson Acoustic (with Ren Ferguson) to Bozeman.
