Brand: Collings, Waterloo
Instrument Categories: Acoustic Steel String, Guitars, SOLD
Here from 2016 is a Waterloo WL-14 LTR, a ladder braced small body guitar, built by Collings as part of the ‘Retro’ Waterloo line, honoring the influential guitars of the 1930s and 1940s. The construction and finishes tend to be very light and thin.
The Waterloo WL-14 is available with either Ladder or X braced tops. Ladder bracing was used well into the 1960’s on many steel string acoustic guitars, and gives quite a bit of stiffness across the top without adding weight, often resulting in a brighter sound – and a lower production cost. Many of the guitars played on vintage blues and folk recordings used ladder bracing.
This Waterloo WL-14 LTR features the Jet Black finish and is in good working order, though it has a couple of finish issues. On the back, there’s a mark from the nitro lacquer finish reacting with the padding on a stand. On the top, there is a mark running from approximately the A bridge pin to the tail block. This does not appear to have penetrated to the inside of the guitar. These two marks are reflected in the lower price of this instrument.
These guitars are very fun to play and if you’re interested in historic American fingerstyles, are excellent substitutes for the vintage instruments that are not only harder to find, but at this point are usually in poor condition.
The original Waterloo hard shell case is included.
