Jurgen Volkert classical guitars are built at the Volkert shop in Lauf an der Pegnitz, east of Nuremberg in the German state of Bavaria. Volkert has been building since 1978, completing an apprenticeship in 1996 as he passed the Master exams as a plucked instrument builder.
The Volkert shop offers several designs – traditional Classical guitars, Gypsy Jazz, Steel String acoustic guitars, the ‘Strongbow’ steel string, Baritone and Lap acoustics, Irish Bouzoukis. Custom models are available. Volkert also offers repairs and modifications to all kinds of acoustic and electric guitar and bass.
Here we have a custom order Volkert classical, cutaway and crossover guitar, signed and dated to 1994 at the Volkert shop in Lauf an der Pegnitz. This guitar was designed for the player’s needs, which included playing Gypsy Jazz and Flamenco styles.
This interesting, well built guitar has a Florentine cutaway and, very unusually for a classical, a 14-fret neck! Because of the player’s needs, full Golpeador or Tap Plates were installed to protect the top. It also has a pickup system installed with two jacks. The controls are in a slightly unusual location – on the lower bass side. The battery access cover is also on the control plate.
This model features a solid European Spruce top, with Indian Rosewood for the back, sides, headplate and bridge. The neck and body blocks are Mahogany, the fingerboard Ebony and the bracing is Spruce. Body binding is Rosewood, and the rosette uses various woods and Mother of Pearl decorations.
This instrument plays well, and has a warm, rich, well developed tone.
A dreadnought-sized hard shell case is included.
