Brand: Twisted Wood Guitars
Instrument Categories: Ukuleles
The Twisted Wood Pioneer Soprano ukulele, formally model PI-100S, is a good quality entry level model, also available in Concert and Tenor sizes at a slightly higher prices. The Soprano model sells for the price listed below, and from that, the larger Concert is available for $10 more, and the even larger Tenor model for $20 above the Soprano. These instruments are designed and developed at the Twisted Wood shop in Sturgeon County Alberta, and built to order in China.
The Twisted Wood Pioneer soprano ukulele body is built with Laminate Sapele. Sapele, formally Entandrophragma Cylindricum, is of the same family as Mahogany (Meliaceae) and is largely found in tropical African countries, particularly in the Congo. This wood has become more commonly used for musical instruments and is often found on Taylor guitars, among others.
In the form of a Laminate, the material is considerably stabler than as Solid wood, with good resistance to cracking under stress from changing humidity and temperature conditions. Laminates may not have the tonal complexity of solid woods, but sometimes that is not the most important factor. For beginners, as well as those travelling, the durability and stability of laminates is very important.
Beyond the Laminate Sapele for the body, the Pioneer uses Mahogany for the neck and body blocks, Spruce for the top and back bracing, and a synthetic material similar to Richlite or Ebonol for the fingerboard and bridge, both of which have a grained appearance.
The Twisted Wood Pioneer Ukuleles come with a gig bag.
