This lovely Thompson 00 Redwood and Rosewood guitar was built around 1996 by Ted Thompson in his one-person shop in beautiful Vernon, located in British Columbia’s Okanagan region.
Ted Thompson has been building since 1979 in the Vernon area. His guitars are exceptionally well and cleanly built and have clear, crisp and well articulated sounds with plenty of harmonic content. These are wonderful instruments for fingerstyle.
Here we’re looking at a Thompson 00 Redwood and Rosewood model, built around 1996. Redwood was chosen as the top material, braced with Sitka Spruce, and Indian Rosewood for the sides and back, bound with Maple. The V-profile neck is a three-piece design with two outer layers of Mahogany on a thin central Ebony strip and Indian Rosewood for the head plate. Ebony is used for the bridge, fingerboard and fingerboard binding. The tuners are gold-plated Waverly models with Ebony buttons. The distinctive Thompson logo is in Abalone, and there are discreet Abalone inlays on the ‘wings’ of the bridge.
An interesting indication of the quality of Thompson’s work is that there is no center strip for the back’s join, but it is two piece. It’s an extremely well joined back, and I had to look twice to verify that it is not actually one piece of Rosewood.
An under-saddle pickup system with pre-amp is installed on this Thompson 00 Redwood, the controls mounted inside the bass side of the soundhole for easy access. The battery itself is presently located inside the back near the bass-side waist, but a previous mount involved a Velcro pad on the neck block – a common location. This pad likely covers the serial number, and could be removed if desired.
This Thompson 00 Redwood top guitar is in very good clean condition and while it has been played there is very little wear. Fret wear is negligible, and this guitar has no cracks, repaired or otherwise.
There are a couple of small dents in the Redwood top, It has a great sound, with good representation throughout its range, plenty of volume, and its light weight and small size make it very comfortable to play. This guitar has been very recently set up at The Twelfth Fret Repair shop.
The original black, arched top hard shell case is included.
