This Teye Coyote from 2014 is one of the rarest types of instruments, a trade show prototype built to spark and gauge interest in the concept before production really begins. The classic Gretsch White Falcon was introduced this way, as a showcase at 1954 trade show. That showcase drove a lot of orders, which was a little awkward because Gretsch hadn’t intended it a production item!
Specifically built as a prototype model for the 2014 NAMM trade shows, this Teye Coyote is one of a handful built with a custom metallic copper colour that didn’t make it to production. The body is Mahogany with a Maple cap, and the neck is Mahogany with a bound Ebony fingerboard sporting a Mother of Pearl inlay set. A pair of diMarzio pickups run through a 5-way switch with two volumes, one tone, and a ‘Mood’ control. A custom built bridge and stop-type tailpiece are used. Grover Roto-Matics are installed at the head.
From there, decorations are largely engraved and inked metals. Teye is well known for its elaborate engravings and decoration, which clearly draw from the work of the late Tony Zemaitis. The Coyote is nowhere near as decorated as some Teye models, which can feature large amounts of shell and metal engraved parts.
One should not think that these guitars are just for show; they’ve got a serious helping of ‘Go!’ as well. This example plays very well, and the fretwork and setup are very good.
The original Gator hard shell case with zippered fabric cover is included.
