It’s rare to see a a Terry McInturff Empress available for sale, like this one in Translucent Green finish, built during 2009 with an AA Quilted Maple top.
The McInturff Empress is a non-symmetrical double-cutaway solidbody electric using the proven formula of a Maple cap on a Mahogany body, with Mahogany for the neck and Indian Rosewood for the fingerboard. On the Empress, the Maple cap is highly figured, AA Quilted Maple. A mixture of Abalone and Mother of Pearl is used for the inlay set.
For hardware, a set of Sperzel locking tuners are at the head with a trem bridge influenced by the classic Fender design at the body. A pair of McInturff single coils are installed with a McInturff humbucker at the Bridge.
The pickups feed through a standard 5-position pickup selector and master volume and tone controls. The finish is a nicely done Translucent Green, really setting off the Quilt figuring of the Maple cap.
This fine McInturff Empress is in good overall condition with light play wear. It plays quite well. The relatively unusual 25.11 inch scale length is quite comfortable, a nice balance between the spacing and tension of both Fender and Gibson standard scale lengths.
Terry C McInturff custom builds in a small shop in Siler City, North Carolina USA, southeast of Greensboro. In 1977, he attended the Roberto-Venn lutherie school with the intention of creating a guitar that would satisfy both Strat and Les Paul players. The Empress and Carolina models are part of the result for standard models. Most of his work is custom ordered, with clients including Eric Clapton, Joe Bonomassa, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck. As each guitar is hand built by McInturff personally, the number of guitars built per year is fairly low and used models are hard to find.
