Each year Taylor offers a series of instruments using special or short supply materials, and this Taylor 814 LTD Cocobolo model comes from the 2002 set.
For the last some years Taylor has installed their Expression System pickup and preamp set as stock on most of their instruments but this 2002 Taylor 814 LTD comes from the period before that. Instead, it has a K&K Mini passive pickup set installed to an output jack; there is no preamp and hence no battery.
This guitar uses a non-cutaway Grand Auditorium design body, pairing a Sitka Spruce top with Cocobolo for the sides, three-section back and head plate. The binding and heel cap are Koa. The body blocks and neck are Mahogany, and Ebony is used for the fingerboard and bridge. As a 2002 model, the neck joint uses the NT design allowing for easy, fast and inexpensive neck angle changes – otherwise known as a reset – should that become necessary. The gold-plated tuners are Grover Roto-Matics.
Overall this Taylor 814 LTD is in overall good shape, in good playing condition, plays well and sounds great. However, there are some visible finish issues primarily on the back, in the form of finish delamination. There are two reasons for this. The first is that Cocobolo is a fairly oily wood, and the second is that at that time, Taylor seems to have had some issues with their UV-cured finishes. This finish issue is cosmetic, not at all structural and does not affect tone or playability.
