Introduced in 1978 and built until 2006, the Taylor 555 12 String is a Spruce and Mahogany, Jumbo bodied model with a huge voice.
Here we’re looking at a Taylor 555 12-string built during 1991 in El Cajon, California. It pairs Sitka Spruce for the top with Mahogany for the sides, back and neck with Ebony for the fingerboard and bridge, but it has no electronics. This guitar was built using a standard dovetail neck joint – the bolt-together patented Taylor joint debuted in 1999.
It may be that the target for the Taylor 555 12 string was the guitars at the top of the 12-string heap at the time, notably the Guild F-512 – though the Taylor is not as decorated as the Guild. The bodies are large – 17 inches across, and the jumbo design seems suited to the enormous range of sounds these can produce.
This example is currently strung with a silk & steel string set and tuned down to C – low to high, the strings are C F A# D# G C. This low tuning produces a throaty, room filling roar that is perfect for playing solo fingerstyle, especially tunes by Leo Kottke or John Fahey.
Overall this guitar is in good shape, with some lacquer checking on the back and top. There is evidence of small crack repairs next to the fingerboard tag, with some glue and bracing visible on the inside.
The original hard shell case is included.
