The Supro / Valco Coronado was one of a large number of models built in the early 1960’s by Valco under the Supro and National names, along with many other brands not owned by Valco. Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois due to that city’s central location for manufacturing and distribution, Valco was the heir to the National and Dobro companies. They made musical instruments and amplifiers for many other companies including catalog giants and Gretsch, until the company’s demise around 1967.
The Coronado was built in several forms. In 1960 and 1961 it was as seen here, with a sealed arched Spruce top with a pair of single coil pickups in humbucking sized covers. By 1963, it sported a completely different shape on a Fibreglass body.
This example dates to 1961 and is in good working order, with original electronics and hardware. The frets are likely original, with a fair amount of wear on a few frets and a good bit of fingernail wear to the fingerboard in the low positions. The ‘Coronado’ logo is largely worn off the original pickguard.
Looking at photos of other examples of this guitar, it seems that the binding was cut through at the factory. Normally, fingerboard binding is intended to seal the ends of the fret slots. Gibson does this by fretting the fingerboard before binding or installing it; other companies by binding the fingerboard first, then notching the frets to fit inside the binding with the bead extending to the outside edge. Here, the binding was applied and the slots cut through it.
This guitar still plays well, and has is beyond cool – it has an undeniably high degree of visual okayness.
A non-original hard shell case is included.
