Here’s an unusual piece to see available – a Stefan Sobell Parlour Brazilian Rosewood guitar, built at Sobell’s Old School shop in Northumberland, UK during January of 2005.
Stefan Sobell has built instruments since 1973, his interest sparked by his wife’s Appalachian Dulcimer; he built an instrument to replace his own Portuguese Guitarra, though when completed it was actually a Cittern. That instrument was used in many folk clubs and resulted in orders for more, and turned into a full time occupation. Sobell now builds to order, about ten instruments per year.
Here we are looking at a Sobell Parlour guitar with Brazilian Rosewood for the head plate, sides and three-piece back. The top is European Spruce, the neck Mahogany, with Ebony for the fingerboard and bridge. The top and rosette use a ‘chicken-foot’ purfling. This guitar has had some service over the years, with a couple of repaired top cracks. The bridge was recently re-glued at The Twelfth Fret Repair Shop. There is a significant amount of saddle height – it would be a very long time before this guitar needed a neck reset. Tuners are gold-coloured Gotoh models with Ebony buttons. A Fishman pickup has been added with the controls accessible from the top edge of the soundhole.
Beyond the repairs that have been done, this piece is in very good clean condition. This is a 14-fret design, with a full 25.5 inch scale length. As a Parlor guitar, it has a small body – but like other Sobell guitars, it’s got an undeniable presence, loud, clear and articulate.
The original Calton light weight flight case is included.
