Based on a wartime ‘Banner Gibson’, the Gibson Sheryl Crow Southern Jumbo Model A, or Model 1, modernizes a 1942 SJ, complete with Script logo and ‘Only a Gibson is Good Enough’ banner, Adirondack Spruce top and Mahogany back and sides.
The Gibson Southern Jumbo or SJ is based very closely on the classic J-45, but with more decoration. It was launched with the J-45 in 1942, but marketed, as the name suggests, to musicians in the American South – south of the Mason-Dixon line. The key differences are in fingerboard binding and position markers.
Keeping in mind 1942 specifications, the Gibson Sheryl Crow Southern Jumbo is built with Adirondack Red Spruce for the top, Mahogany for the sides, back, neck plus neck and tail blocks, and Rosewood for the bound fingerboard and rectangular, saddle-through bridge. Unlike the wartime models, the neck profile is modern, and there is actually a truss rod! The rod was not always used during the war, depending on the availability of steel for civilian purposes. At the head, Waverly open gear tuners are installed, and these are also made in Bozeman.
Gibson launched the Sheryl Crow Southern Jumbo Model A as a 2013 model to celebrate these classic guitars. Ms Crow has long played the SJ, or its renamed descendant, the Country-Western model. While these officially launched for the 2013 model year, they started appearing in late May 2012. The documentation for this early production guitar specifies a final checkover date of June 18, 2012 at the Gibson Acoustic plant in beautiful Bozeman, Montana.
All of the original documentation, including the Certificate of Authenticity signed by Sheryl Crow, is in the case. Her signature is also on the label.
This guitar is in very nice shape with only minor wear. Fret wear is light, and there are a few light scuffs to the finish.
It also a factory-installed pickup, an Amulet True-Stereo system, which uses two elements mounted on the bridge plate, underneath the saddle. The preamp is in a box on the lower treble side of the back, and a 5-pin jack provides low-impedance cable access to a
control box.
Overall, this guitar plays well and sounds great, though it hasn’t been played enough to open up to its full voice. It will be a fantastic guitar once it does.
The original hard shell case is included.
