This Sergei de Jonge Classical Spruce top guitar was built during 2000 in Toronto, following de Jonge’s return to Canada from a year in Holland and prior to his move to Chelsea, Quebec where his shop and school are now located.
Having learned guitar building in Toronto during the years 1969 to 1971 from Jean Larrivee and Edgar Monch via Eli Kassner, and then a year with Patt Lister in Collingwood, this de Jonge classical shows these strong influences yet has moved beyond them.
The lattice-braced top is lightly figured Sitka Spruce with a contrasting wooden rosette ring, the sides, back, bridge and head plate are Indian Rosewood, the body blocks and neck are Mahogany, and the fingerboard is a consistently black Ebony. The tie-block trim, nut and compensated saddle are bone. The tuners are excellent Gotoh 35G1800 models with black buttons. It is presently fitted with Savarez strings.
Like a number of other prominent builders of both classical and steel string guitars, here de Jonge uses a hybrid tenon and bolt neck joint. This allows for a much safer and less involved process should a neck reset or extensive refinish ever be required. This guitar is nowhere near that state!
This example of Sergei de Jonge classical guitars is in overall very good condition with only light play wear. French polish is a very thin finish. As expected after 23 years of use, it has some light fingernail markings below the treble strings. There is one small pressure mark on the back of the neck, and virtually no fret wear. This guitar plays well and has a well-developed voice.
The original Tweed arched-top TKL hard shell case is included.
