One of Canada’s premiere luthiers, Sergei de Jonge has built many instruments over a long career. Here we have a 630mm scale length classical guitar in Spruce with Indian Rosewood. In addition to building, Sergei also runs courses in building and French Polishing, which many other luthiers, both aspiring and established, have attended.
This classical guitar was built during 2007 at the current de Jonge shop in Chelsea, Quebec. It is a smaller scale model, with 630mm scale length and 50mm nut. The top is lattice-braced Spruce, and the sides, back, headplate and bridge are Indian Rosewood. The neck is Mahogany with an Ebony fingerboard. Tuners are Gotoh models, satin gold plated with marbled plastic buttons. There is one dot position marker on the fingerboard bass edge, at the 7th fret. The neck is not attached in the traditional Spanish style, where it is mated to the sides, but instead there is some sort of tenon or dovetail joint. This makes the guitar slightly heavier but also far more repairable, should the need arise.
French Polish offers a guitar the mimimum restriction on vibration but with a correspondingly light physical protection. Over time, marks will naturally accumulate from normal use regardless of care taken. This instrument is now eleven years old and has been played, so it has some fingernail marks, but no serious dents or scratches. Because it has been played, its voice has developed nicely and it has a full, rich, warm tone with good even representation throughout the frequency range.
A Tweed double-arched TKL hard shell case is included.
