The Scheerhorn L Body – for Large Body – resophonic guitar is a hand built instrument bringing new ideas to the resophonic concept. While Tim Scheerhorn guitars are sought after by top players, they have some modern construction features that provide not only higher volume but a great, ‘modern’ tone.
In particular, during development Scheerhorn realized that the traditional Dobro-design ‘Sound Well’ – essentially a Maple laminate hoop, like a banjo pot or drum shell with holes to allow sound to move – dampened the top and back. Removing this and adding what’s essentially a plastic baffle or even folded horn arrangement to guide sound out of the top allowed the guitar to resonate more, with a result of improved responsiveness, low and midrange tone and volume. It also makes the guitar lighter! As a note, this baffle piece is somewhat reminiscent a part installed in early Selmer / Maccaferri guitars.
Resophonic builders hold that the cone is responsible for midrange and high end frequencies, while the low end uses the ports. The baffle helps those frequencies travel further or rebound inside the guitar, further supporting the low end on its way out of the ports.
Here we’re looking at a Tim Scheerhorn L Body Koa square neck resophonic guitar, signed and dated – in two places! – by Tim Scheerhorn himself. The label, visible through the bass sound hole, lists a build date of 11/22/08, or November 22 2008, and bears Tim Scheerhorn’s signature. Those same pieces of information – the date and the signature – are also hand written on the inside of the back. The resonator is a traditional Spider and Cone type, with an ebony capped Maple bridge. The fingerboard has a ‘Snowflake’ Abalone inlay set and ‘Scheerhorn’ engraved on a Mother of Pearl block after the last fret.
This fine instrument is in overall very good condition with little wear, and certainly zero fret wear. The thin satin finish is in overall good condition.
Unlike most other resophonic guitar builders, Tim Scheerhorn uses solid woods, not laminates, to improve the resonance of the guitar – especially important since the heavy sound well has been removed. Here, the body is Hawaiian Koa, with Ebony used for neck stiffeners and the unbound fingerboard.
The original Tweed hard shell case by TKL is included.
