Robert Laughlin has been building guitars, mandolins and related stringed instruments in Vancouver, British Columbia since 1977. He started building following a night course run by Bill Lewis, who went on to found Luthiers Mercantile. He has since built hundreds of instruments and has developed a unique body style for his guitars; he also offers Mandolins, Octave Mandolins and Celtic Bouzoukis.
Here we have a Laughlin Concert model steel string guitar built during 1983. Its body design is a bit smaller than a dreadnought, and is built with a Sitka Spruce top and Indian Rosewood for the back, sides, headplate and bridge with Mahogany for the neck and Ebony for the fingerboard. A Carbon Fiber rod was built into the neck for stiffness without weight.
It has a full 25.5 inch scale length and 1.75 inch nut width. It uses a slotted peghead, which increases the break-over angle from the nut to the tuning gear post, and this helps increase sustain and tonal separation on the open strings. The nut and saddle are bone, and the tuners are gold-plated Schaller models with Ebony buttons.
This guitar is over 30 years old and has had some repairs. A top crack has been repaired and cleated, and it’s been set up in our shop. There is some pick / play wear to the top.
This is a superb ‘technical fingerstyle’ guitar with full bass response even when played very lightly and Well balanced trebles. Its responsiveness makes it Ideal for advanced fingerstyle players, especially those with a light attack.
The Current action, at 4/64ths inch on the treble side and 6/64ths on the bass, is about as low as anybody would want to go. There is another 64th of scope to lower the saddle if needs be – plus, the bridge is VERY tall and another 1.5 to 2/64ths can be gained if one wanted by shaving the bridge top slightly.
A TRIC case is included.
