The Rickenbacker 4003 Bass is one of the most distinctive instruments. For some people, it evokes Chris Squire, for others McCartney, and for others…. Lemmy. Designed in the mid 1950’s by Roger Rossmeisl as a counterpoint to the highly successful Fender bass, the Rickenbacker bass uses a ‘Cresting Wave’ body shape and neck-through construction.
Dating to the third week of January, 2016, this Rickenbacker 4003S sports a gloss black ‘Jet-Glo’ finish. The 4003S differs from the traditional 4000 in a few ways – the body is unbound, the edges are rounder, and it does not have the Rick-O-Sound jack plate. Instead, there’s a push-pull pot at the treble tone control for the bass-cut circuit.
Under the finish, it’s built of Maple, and the fingerboard is unbound, finished Rosewood. There is one small chip in the headstock – these can be hard to avoid. Otherwise it is complete and in very clean condition. The original pickup cover is in the original case.
In its first incarnations as the 4000 series, these basses used Rickenbacker’s patented horse-shoe magnet pickup. Those are long gone – they are expensive to produce and heavy – and replaced with conventional single coil models.
Here’s what Rickenbacker says about the Rickenbacker 4003S model:
” This traditional Rickenbacker bass style with dot inlays and no binding was prized by Paul McCartney and Chris Squire when they got their first 4001S models in 1964. Players cherish its traditional look and rounded edges that many claim make it more comfortable than the 4003.
The updated 4003S version comes with the improved dual trussrod system. Of course, the famous solid bass tones, ringing sustain and treble punch we’re known for make it a dream. It’s no wonder we’ve received a steady demand of requests to bring this back.
This design was once exclusive to the British distributor Rose Morris in the six-ties. Iconic curves of maple form the body with a traditional Rosewood fingerboard. Dot inlays and no binding make this stand out from the standard 4003. “
