Here is a very unusual guitar – a Replica Bigsby 49 Standard, reproducing one of the very few, very first, very influential solidbody electric guitars.
Paul Arthur Bigsby was a machinist with a strong interest in motorcycles and, as it turned out, guitars. He built a number of pedal steel guitars, perhaps 50 Spanish style guitars, and designed a now widely used hand vibrato tailpiece for Merle Travis. As well, he replaced the neck on Merle’s Martin, with a much slimmer neck sporting the distinctive Bigsby headstock. This neck aided the Travis style, which involves wrapping the left thumb over the low strings for bass notes.
While the Bigsby True Vibrato is what he is most remembered for, the few Spanish style guitars he built have had an outsized influence on electric guitars since then. One of the most visible aspects of this is the headstock, which clearly presages what Leo Fender used on his Stratocaster in 1954.
This is a well made replica Bigsby 49 Standard, put together as a one-off by a skilled Canadian builder. Like Paul Bigsby’s original Standard models, it features a body built with Birds-Eye Maple top and back caps on a Black Walnut body, with a Birds-Eye Maple neck and Indian Rosewood fingerbpard and head plate. The pickups are custom made to reflect the original models. This replica does include a Bigsby B7 vibrato tailpiece and the standard Bigsby aluminum bridge.
A hard shell case is included.
