The Ramirez SPR classical guitar continues the tradition of the Ramirez 1a Especial model. Conceived by the maestro-luthier Amalia Ramirez, the SP-R furthers the evolution to the ‘modern’ sound. In the model designation, the SP refers to ‘Semi Professional’ and the R for Revised – this model supersedes and improves the original Ramirez SP.
Based on professional grade model designs, the top of the Ramirez SPR is built at the Ramirez shop and the guitar completed offsite. The Ramirez home shop is not a large place, and Madrid doesn’t allow spray finishing within the city limits, so offsite completion is necessary. It is available with either a Spruce or Cedar top, and in either 650mm or 664mm scale length. The construction is characteristic Ramirez, with solid Indian Rosewood back and sides, headplate and bridge, Spanish Cedar neck, and Ebony fingerboard.
While it isn’t either Spanish or Cedar, Spanish Cedar or Cedrela Odorata, is similar to Mahogany – both are members of the Meliaceae family. Spanish Cedar is native to Central and South America, but in limited supply from there, so it is grown on plantations in West African countries such as Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Cameroon.
Here is Grant MacNeill describing this spruce topped, lacquer finished Ramirez SPR, built in 2012:
“The Ramirez SPR offers full bass and nicely balanced trebles. The spruce top offers a crisper, articulate treble compared to the benchmark model, the Cedar topped 1a Traditional. The top is braced with 8 fans like the Conservatorio model. On this 650mm 2012 example, the action is set to a standard classical height of 8/64ths treble and 9/64ths inches bass. There is plenty of scope at the saddle to go to lower action if requested, and we will do this at no charge. This Ramirez SPR is a superb instrument for an advanced classical player.”
This guitar is sold with the original Spanish hard shell case.
