The Ramirez SP, now the Semi-Professional model, bridges the ‘Estudio’ and ‘Handcraft’ classical guitars and is intended for the accomplished student player about to move to professional status. Like other ‘Estudio’ models, the Semi-Professional is partly built in the city of Madrid at the Ramirez shop – it’s worth noting that Madrid prohibits spray finishing and so that type of finishing is done at shops outside the city limits.
Originally, the Ramirez SP design by Jose Ramirez IV appeared in the early 1990’s in very limited numbers, as the Special Professional. This guitar was similar the famous Ramirez 1a Traditional Professional but at a much lower price. In 2003, Amalia Ramirez refined and re-issued the design as the SP seen here; in 2012, further revisions produced the current SPR model.
This Ramirez SP Semi-Professional example comes from the 2003 refinement. It features the optional Spruce top rather than Red Cedar. The sides, back, headplate and bridge are Indian Rosewood, the neck Spanish Cedar with an Ebony fingerboard. It is conceived as a professional, concert design, with a full 650mm scale length and 52mm wide nut. This guitar is also fitted with a passive K&K Mini pickup set, which consists of three elements mounted under the bridge and wired to an end pin jack. No batteries are required, and there are no volume controls mounted on the guitar.
This guitar is in good condition, but it has been played for 15 years so it has had a few marks and dings, and a small top crack under the bridge was repaired and cleated by Bruce Dowd. It plays well, is very responsive and has the bright, crisp responsiveness and volume characteristic of Spruce top guitars.
The original Ramirez hard shell case is included.
