The PRS Standard appeared in 1987 as an evolutionary step and as a model rename from the 1985 PRS model, with carved top, all Mahogany construction except for the 1o inch radius, 25 inch scale Rosewood fingerboard. Until 1991, Brazilian Rosewood was used for fingerboards on this model.
Here we’re looking at a PRS Standard, built during 1987 in Annapolis, Maryland and sporting a dark tobacco sunburst model, which transitions to a darker red on the back and neck. This guitar has definitely been used as intended but cared for; there are the small dings and dents around the body that come from actual use. There is a small set of pick marks in the top just above the bass strings, clearly from enthusiastic playing. Fret wear is moderate in the lower positions, but there is plenty of fret material to have them dressed, crowned and polished to perfection.
This PRS Standard plays and balances well, and with the short, contoured heel access to the highest frets is almost unrestricted.
A non-original hard shell case is included.
Here’s a list of basic features and components of the 1987 PRS Standard, from the PRS Model History page:
- Back angled 3 on-a-side non-veneered headstock
- One-piece mahogany glued in neck, regular shape
- 25 inch (635mm) scale length, 24-fret
- Single-action truss rod (double action truss rod fitted from late ’91).
- 10 inch (254mm) radiused Indian rosewood fretboard. (Brazilian rosewood was standard until it was phased out by early 90 – 91 on all but top-line limited models such as the Dragons, etc.)
- Mother-of-pearl/Abalone moon inlays (birds optional).
- One-piece mahogany body or back.
- Pickups were originally Standard Treble and Standard Bass. End slugs on E & B changed in ’87 to reduce high end.
- PRS Tremolo System, Schaller/PRS locking tuners, low friction nut.
