Here we’re looking at a Pedro de Miguel Flamenco Negra Guitar, built during 1999 and showing signs of being well used for its intended purpose.
Traditionally, Flamenco guitars are built very lightly, with Spruce tops and Cypress for the sides and back, and with a low action. The goal is to produce a bright, percussive and responsive tone with fast attack. Because of the light colour of Cypress wood, these are referred to as Flamenco Blanca guitars. More recently, Rosewood is being used in place of Cypress, and the dark colour makes them known as Flamenco Negra models. These guitars have a somewhat warmer tone.
This Pedro de Miguel Flamenco Negra Guitar dates to 1999 and was built at their shop at Amor de Dios in Madrid. It uses traditional Spanish construction integrating the sides and neck. The top is Spruce, while the sides, back, bridge and head plate are Indian Rosewood. The neck is Spanish Cedar or Cedrela, which is neither Spanish or Cedar, but instead a type of Mahogany. The fingerboard is Ebony. The headstock follows the pattern for Classical guitars, with slots holding standard tuning gears rather than being flat with traditional wooden friction pegs.
The guitar is in good working order, and has clearly been used for its intended purpose. Flamenco can be a vigorous, physical style and so there’s a large clear plastic tap plate or Golpeador protecting the top. Still, there is a worn area on the bass side of the soundhole where the player’s thumb anchored, and on the lower part of the treble side from the follow through of rasgueado . There are a number of small dents and dings from honest use.
A period hard shell case is included.
Pedro de Miguel refers to Pedro Perez and Miguel Rodriguez, who entered apprenticeship at the Ramirez shop in Madrid, Spain, eventually becoming master craftsmen working with Jose Ramirez III.
In 1991, Pedro and Miguel established their own workshop. Their hand built instruments are sought after by top flamenco artists, and they also offer a line of guitars built to their specifications.
Sadly, Pedro Perez passed away in 2008, but the shop continues at Calle Amor de Dios 13, or Love of God, near the center for Flamenco and Spanish dance.
