Part of the NRP ‘Raw Series’ line, the National Raw Steel 12 Fret Reso-Phonic guitar delivers a vintage-style look and sound in a modern and more affordable package.
Here we’re looking at a National Raw Steel 12 fret model, with a label date of 06/20 for June of 2020. It is in overall good condition, with the wear and oxidation expected for a raw steel finish. It plays well, and has the unmistakable National tone, volume and presence.
The original National branded hard shell case is included.
The Raw series body is available in both 12 and 14 fret versions, and the choice of neck length affects the body shape; the longer neck ‘squares’ the shoulders somewhat. These guitars are also available in raw steel, brass, and ‘German Silver’ – which is neither German nor Silver, but an alloy of nickel, zinc and copper. The neck is Maple, with an Ebony fingerboard.
This ebony is not ‘jet black’ as used to be the case, but shows lighter areas. This is partly the result of the sustainability work of Bob Taylor, Madinter and their purchase of the Crelicam Ebony mill in Cameroon. In the past, forestry workers would fell, examine and abandon up to 90% of the Ebony trees if they didn’t meet the aesthetic standard. Under the new ownership, little is left on the floor, improving supplies and local wages.
