Here we have another unusual guitar – a Modulus Graphite T Style model, based on the classic Fender model but with a composite Graphite neck and an EMG 3-pickup set!
Modulus Graphite was launched in 1978 after Geoff Gould, an engineer with an aerospace company in Palo Alto California, was taken with the Alembic bass used by Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead. Deciding to experiment with non-traditional materials, he worked with Alembic to create carbon fiber necks. In 1977 they demonstrated a prototype bass at a trade show, and this was promptly purchased by John McVie. Gould, with the help of other aerospace colleagues, then formed Modulus Graphite to produce necks, and ultimately complete instruments. Until 2005, some guitars were offered but the company’s focus was on basses. In 2013, they filed for a Chapter 7 bankruptcy and since then have re-formed under new ownership.
This Modulus Graphite T Style features a Coral Pink finish on what is likely an Ash body, given its weight, with a rear comfort cutout, and the proprietary Modulus Graphite neck. The neck is polished gloss but has no other finish, and the fingerboard is a separate layer. This neck is not adjustable – strength and stability are what these necks are all about. The hardware is finished in black, including a set of Gotoh sealed tuners, a six-saddle Tele-style bridge, and a traditional Tele style control plate, vintage style knobs and a 5-way switch. An EMG 3-pickup set is installed, and the standard 9v battery is in the control cavity.
This Modulus Graphite T Style guitar is in overall good condition, with the most visible wear being a small dent in the top, to the bass side of the lower strap pin. Fret wear is light to moderate, and there’s enough fret left for a dress and recrown.
