Something very special – the Michael Greenfield ‘Black Cherry’ archtop guitar, custom built for the 2009 Montreal Guitar Show and the ‘Red Guitar’ set.
This Michael Greenfield ‘Black Cherry’ Archtop is a spectacular instrument. The hand-carved top is Master Grade Spruce with Adirondack Spruce braces, and the sides and hand-carved back are AAAA Grade Big Leaf Maple. The neck is maple with carbon reinforcement, and a two-way truss rod adjustment at the head. The fingerboard, bridge, tailpiece, headstock veneer and finger-rest are Ebony. For hardware, the head carries Gotoh 510 tuners and a Kent Armstrong pickup is mounted at the neck; the volume and tone controls are hidden under the pickguard.
This instrument is in very good condition, with only very light wear. The finish is Nitrocellulose Lacquer, so as expected it is naturally sinking with time, allowing the texture of the wood grain to be visible.
The original Calton hard shell case is included – and in keeping with the theme, it is red!
Greenfield Guitars are built by Michael Greenfield in Montreal, Quebec. While working as a professional musician during the 1970’s, Greenfield developed an interest in repairs and restoration of vintage and antique guitars, and in the later 1990s began building full time. He has built hundreds of custom guitars since then.
Michael Greenfield had this to say about the development of the design elements for the ‘Red Guitar’ theme:
” As I continued to think about this color and look, I decided that it was very “black cherry”- like and hence the theme of the guitar was born. A month or two later, I was having brunch at a local Montréal diner and there was some artwork of a 50s style pin-up girl at the cash. I though how cool it would be to have something like this on the guitar but to have her holding a bunch of black cherries on a stem. I could also use cherries as position markers and put a bunch of cherries on the peghead face. Then I added the solitary cherry on the rear of the peghead (just in case the owner forgot where he was while playing, he could look at the peghead for a subtle reminder). What fun! That was it! It had all come together.”
