Sometimes a guitar can surprise you. I picked up this Martin J-40 having handled a number of 000 guitars recently, and was taken aback by its depth and power. It sounds fantastic!
The Martin J-40 appeared in 1990 as a reworking of the J-40 M introduced in 1985. Though the J body is not a lot bigger than a triple-0, it has a remarkably full bottom end and midrange presence delivered without hesitation. The top end is as bright and sparkly as you would expect from a Sitka Spruce top.
This Martin J-40 dates to early 2005 and was built at the Martin plant in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. It pairs a Sitka Spruce top with Indian Rosewood for the back, sides and headplate, and as typical, Mahogany for the neck with an Ebony bridge and bound Ebony fingerboard. The action is comfortably low, and there is lots of saddle protruding. An L R Baggs Anthem pickup set has been added, with the battery bag attached to the neck block and the controls are tucked under the bass side of the soundhole.
The Martin J-40 is a fairly ‘classy’ guitar, yet with some restraint; the hexagonal inlay set is done in Abalone, with a single Abalone ring in the rosette to match. The tuners are stock Martin and gold-plated.
This guitar is in good shape with light play wear and light fret wear. It has actually been played, and sounds like it, with a well developed voice.
The original Geib-style case is included.
