The Martin HD-28V offered many vintage spec features as part of the Vintage Series produced from 1998 to late 2018. Based on the classic D-28, the ‘H’ refers to the Herringbone purfling used around the top, as was standard on Martins into the early years of WW2. At the start of that War, Martin realized that their herringbone purfling supplier was in Germany, and resupply would be impossible. Once their supplies ran out, much simpler purfling was used, and that remained the case until 1976. Again drawing from the vintage models, the X braces are scalloped and are forward-shifted.
This particular Martin HD-28V was built as a custom order in 2012, becoming the grand prize at the 2013 River Valley Bluegrass Festival draw. As a custom order, the words ‘River Valley Bluegrass 2013’ are inlaid at the 16th to 19th frets.
It is otherwise a stock model, with a Sitka Spruce top paired with Indian Rosewood for the sides, back and head plate. The bridge and unbound fingerboard are Ebony. The body blocks, liners and neck are Mahogany. For hardware, Martin branded open-gear tuners are installed, and there are no electronics. No strap pin was added to the heel, and the original tail pin is in the case.
This Martin HD-28V is in overall good condition, with light play and fret wear and one unfortunate scratch to the top finish. It plays well and sounds good, but it may not have been played enough to fully develop its voice. That’s something for its next owner to experience!
The original Martin branded Geib-style case is included.
