The name of the Martin HD-28LSV indicates that it’s a Herringbone-purfled D-28, with a Large Soundhole and part of the Vintage series.
This Martin HD-28LSV, designed for bluegrass, dates to 2000 and is in good condition, with several professional crack repairs including cleats, and moderate to heavy fret wear, primarily in the lower positions and top strings. The inside back center strip has a secondary brand beyond the ‘CF Martin’ marking – directions to use Medium gauge or lighter strings. It plays well, has a well developed voice and plenty of projection.
As a HD-28 LSV from 2000, the materials start with a Spruce top paired with Rosewood. Here, the top is Sitka Spruce and the sides, back and head plate Indian Rosewood. From its introduction in 1997 until 2000, this model had an Adirondack spruce top as the source guitar did. The source guitar, a pre-war D-28, also used Brazilian Rosewood. The body blocks and neck are Mahogany, with Ebony for the bridge and bound fingerboard. There are no fingerboard position markers.
The Martin HD-28LSV model was built from 1997 to 2005, and is based on a specific 1935 D-28 purchased in 1958 by 15-year-old Clarence White. That guitar was in rough shape – the soundhole had been enlarged and the fingerboard removed. Repairs, especially the replacement of the fingerboard, were done by luthier Milt Owen. White played that guitar for years until using it as collateral for a loan on a Telecaster. In 1973 while loading out after a gig, White was killed by a drunk driver.
