The Martin D41 appeared in 1969 as a midpoint between the standard D-35 and the top of the line D-45 dreadnought models. Combining the Spruce-Rosewood pairing of the D-28 with Abalone top binding and inlays, the D-41 was the first ‘new’ model as Martin ceased its use of Brazilian Rosewood, and past the first 37 examples all are Indian Rosewood, with Sitka Spruce tops. The fingerboard and bridge are Ebony. The top and back bracing is Sitka Spruce, with some scalloping to the top bracing.
Here we have a very nice Martin D41 built during 2008 at the Martin plant in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. It has one one small ding in the top but otherwise is in good overall shape. The nitrocellulose lacquer finish is starting to sink, which is to be expected on a guitar now 11 years old.
This guitar has been well looked after, but it has been played and so there is moderate fretwear in the lower positions, especially on the B and E strings, but it plays cleanly as is. It has been set up by Anne Hartman and sounds really good!
The original hard shell case is included.
The Martin Style 41 largely describes a set of appointments, materials and decoration. Introduced in the 1970 catalog, the first models were built for 1969. The style features an Abalone border around the top of the body (but not the fingerboard tag), an Abalone rosette and a bound fingerboard with Abalone position markers taken from the Style 45 inlay set. Originally, there were six position markers, at frets 3, 5,7, 9, 12 and 15. By the time this guitar was built, two more inlays had been added, at the first and 17th frets. The headstock is also bound, with an Abalone ‘C F Martin’ logo. The backstrip is also taken from the Style 45, and the body is bound in white. Metal hardware is gold plated.
