The Martin D16H was built from 1991 to 1993, and sought to combine vintage D-18 elements with modern neck profiles and led to the D-18V models.
Relatively rare, the Martin D16H is one of the hidden gems from the Martin line. Lightweight and built as well as the other Dreadnought models and like the D-18, the D16H features a Sitka Spruce top with Mahogany for the sides, back, body blocks and neck. Bracing for the top uses a 1930’s forward shifted, scalloped model. The bridge and unbound fingerboard are Indian Rosewood. The back received a Herringbone center strip, and a Herringbone ring around the soundhole. The tuners are sealed Martin branded models with ebony buttons. It looks a lot like a D-18.
This Martin D16H dates to 1992 – in fact the neck block is stamped ‘D16 H 92’ and was built at the Martin shop in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. It’s in overall good condition with some wear. Fret wear is moderate, and there are a few small dents and dings around the guitar, understandable for a 28 year old instrument. A three-element K&K Mini passive pickup set has been added to the bridge plate, leading to an endpin jack. There is a piece of Velcro pad glued to the inner bass side at the waist, for mounting a battery pack or preamp. It’s quite light at under four pounds or 1.78kg, and has had a strap pin installed to the heel.
This guitar has been played, and you can tell when playing or listening to it. Its voice has developed and filled out, with full range representation and lots of the top end sparkle and full lows and mids characteristic of D18 models. It sounds really good, and plays well.
